A Toast to Brooklyn Lager's 35th Anniversary

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Brooklyn Lager, the flagship beer of the trailblazing Brooklyn Brewery. Born from a dream to restore brewing to Brooklyn, the Lager has played a significant role in establishing the Williamsburg-based brewery as a vanguard of the American craft beer movement. Over the past three and a half decades, the award-winning Lager has become a mainstay of the craft beer scene, earning accolades and loyal fans across the United States and more than 30 countries worldwide.
To commemorate this milestone, Brooklyn Brewery launched a two-day celebration at Teddy’s Bar & Grill at the end of March. As one of the first establishments to carry Brooklyn Lager back in 1988, Teddy’s Bar & Grill provides a fitting venue to honor the iconic beer’s enduring legacy and success.

Brooklyn Lager’s journey began in the late 1980s when co-founders Steve Hindy and Tom Potter introduced the world to this revolutionary amber beer. The Lager was initially conceived by William Moeller, a fourth-generation German-American brewmaster, whose innovative vision was further refined when James Beard Award-winning brewmaster Garrett Oliver joined Brooklyn Brewery in 1994.
At a time when light lagers dominated the American palate, Brooklyn Lager distinguished itself with its bold flavors, inspired by a pre-Prohibition American style of Lager. The Lager’s distinctive taste not only stood out from the crowd but also paid homage to its roots in Brooklyn, a borough once synonymous with American beer production.

The iconic beer’s logo, designed by legendary graphic artist Milton Glaser, has become synonymous with quality and innovation in the craft beer world. Over the years, Brooklyn Lager has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including the 2018 World Beer Cup Gold Medal in the American Amber Lager Category, attesting to its exceptional character and enduring appeal.

Brooklyn Brewery’s commitment to quality and innovation extends beyond the Lager, with a diverse lineup of beers that cater to a wide range of tastes and preferences. However, the flagship Lager remains at the heart of the brewery’s identity and success as a testament to its pioneering spirit and the power of a well-crafted beer to transcend borders and bring people together. As the craft beer landscape continues to evolve and expand, Brooklyn Lager serves as a reminder of the brand’s influential role in shaping the industry’s trajectory. The Lager has stood the test of time, providing a benchmark for quality and consistency in an increasingly competitive market.
