I have a secret to tell you -there’s not many times I truly enjoy industry events in Los Angeles. For some reason I can’t get passed the fluff and glamour that often accompanies said events however, I had the opportunity last weekend to attend FIDM’s 23rd Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition and the night absolutely blew me away. The exhibition featured over 100 costumes from 2014’s most respected feature films. The displayed works included costumes from Maleficent, The Great Gatsby, Selma, Jersey Boys, Belle, X-Men and many others.
Guests were greeted with a red carpet entry to a beautiful dinner and mixer prior to entering the exhibit. Attendees were a combination of students, artists, and film & fashion professionals and many of the costumes exhibited were designed by FIDM alumni.
This was my first time attending The 23rd Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition and I found myself in awe of the extreme detail in the designs for the five nominees for the Academy Award’s Best Costume. Seeing these pieces up close and personal all the while knowing some of my favorite actors wore them (Angelina) gave me a new appreciation for the art of costume design. The winner for Best Costume will be announced during the Oscars on February 22nd and I can’t wait to see which one wins. Personally, I think Anna B. Sheppard’s design takes the cake. The organizers at FIDM get a round of applause for putting together such an incredibly inspiring event.
