Vintage Flows: 5 Wine Varietals Worth Every Penny

“Who they attractin’ with that line, “What’s your name what’s your sign?”
Soon as he buy that wine I just creep up from behind
And ask what your interests are, who you be with
Things to make you smile, what numbers to dial
You gon’ be here for a while, I’m gon’ go call my crew
You go call your crew
We can rendezvous at the bar around two”

One of my life missions is not only to educate the masses about wine, but to teach how to purchase quality wine for a reasonable price. I’ve learned that good wine is not measured by the price tag, good marketing is. There are however, certain types of wines that the saying “You get what you pay for” comes into play. This article will give you a list of five varietals and regions that when I have a taste for, the price is never an issue. By no means am I saying break the bank, but if you can round up an extra ten dollars on your wine budget it will be well worth the investment.

FRENCH ROSÉ – It wasn’t until recently that I discovered French Rosé and what truly makes it so special. I always associated Rosé with White Zinfandel which has actually been the biggest mistake of my wine career. Besides them both being blush wine, I don’t consider them to be alike in the slightest. French Rosé is perfect for any intimate setting. A nice relaxed evening with you and your partner is the perfect pairing for this wine. It compliments the atmosphere and moment of just you two enjoying one another’s company. Honestly in a short time it’s definitely become one of my favorites.

ITALIAN  GAVI – Gavi is strictly made in Italy. Personally, it’s my favorite white wine, hands down. It’s tart and dry with some sour fruit flavors, that if you love Sour Patch Kids like I do, you will have an appreciation for Gavi as well. Being only made in Piedmont, Italy there is a large markup for these wines. But I assure you, once you gain a taste for this wine, it will create a yearning that you will often need to satisfy.

PORTUGUESE BORDEAUX – I know what you’re thinking, aren’t Bordeaux’s primarily made in France? Well you’re right, however there is a region of Portugal called Douro that is producing some of the best Bordeaux-like wine for the dollar on the market. They have the appeal of a $100 French Bordeaux for an eighth of the price. You’re still not paying a lot for these Portuguese wines, but paying $15-$18 instead of $10-$13 for a quality wine can be an epic experience.

CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY – California Chardonnay is a “new world” wine. Chardonnays were originally from Burgundy France and are known to be lighter and more minerally. I’ve never really been a fan if I’m being completely honest with you. California Chardonnays however, are known to be rich, oaky and buttery. As you probably know by now my friends, I am completely here for it! This is a great winter white wine. Out of all white wines, California Chardonnay is what I would most likely pair with a steak. Priced roughly around $30-$40 for a great chardonnay, It can be a tough pill to swallow, but the textures and flavors should definitely wash it right down.

SPANISH RIOJA – In my opinion, it’s one of the sexier red wines. Maybe it’s the pronunciation or maybe it’s the fact that I taste a little bit of bacon in it. I have been saying it for some time now, but Spain is truly an underrated wine producer. Even though Spanish wines have existed literally forever, it is not considered to be in the same class as Italy and France. That may actually be for good reason, but I feel there’s a passion in Spanish wines that is truly intoxicating. I can literally taste the love, and the bacon. Can’t forget the bacon.

So there’s my list of 5 of my favorite wine varietals and regions. Definitely worth digging through the sofa cushions, bottom of purses, or under drivers seats for an extra few bucks to slightly increase your wine experience. Know this information comes from not only my heart, but also from my pocket as well. My wine budget isn’t always ideal, and when it isn’t I like to get the best value for my hard earned. I hope this helps you all and always, I do it #fordacultcha .
