Trend Report: Trapeze Bag

It’s finally fall, which means two things: pumpkin spice lattes are now pervading the air and secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it’s officially time to fill your closet with the latest leather goodies. It seems as though Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear collections have formally retired the slouchy, distressed, bohemian, carry-all hobo bags once and for all. (Thank God!) The name “hobo bag” speaks for itself, and I think it’s time to move on to a handbag that closer resembles the life of a modern day fashionista: chic and structured. Characterized by their unique trapezoid-esque shape, clean lines, and minimalistic leather designs, the Trapeze bag seems to enrapture exactly that sentiment.

Trapeze bags have flooded the runways this season and are sure to be the pinnacle in purse trends for fall. Major houses such as Celinè, Versace, Fendi, even Michael Kors have all presented their own take on these trapezoidal treasures. The minimalistic sophistication of these handbags is ultra-reminiscent of the classic Hermès Kelly bag, named after the queen of class herself, Grace Kelly. This late 50’s feel is also epitomized by both the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Sicily bag, which come in a myriad of dazzling color combos, as well as Dior’s new Be-Dior bag, whose iconic new campaign features Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.

The lack of extraneous details on these bags provides a sense of refreshing sense of simplicity, which is quite the contrast from the tassels, fringe, and studs that have been previously running rampantly down the runway. What’s even better is that these oh-so-chic handbags effortlessly transition from your work-wear to your evening ensembles, all without even flinching. The sizes and colors of these Trapeze bags vary; each one having it’s own unique twist from designer to designer. However, the gorgeous new geometric silhouettes are a most certainly shared characteristic amongst them all.

While the more high end designer bags can run up to about $3,500 and are available at luxury department stores such as Barney’s, Saks, and Neiman Marcus, other moderately-priced contemporary stores such as Zara and ASOS have created similarly styled bags priced at under $200 each, so that this autumn can be equally as trendy for everyone.

Who said bags have to be baggy? We could all use a little bit more structure in our lives, and incorporating a trapeze bag into your fall wardrobe is definitely a step in the right direction.
