The First NYC Men’s Fashion Week

We fashionistas all know what time it is: time for New York Fashion Week! (this easily translates to spending hours in front of the laptop watching recaps of the shows…at least for me it does!) This year, the CFDA or the Council of Fashion Designers of America (basically the driving force behind every fashion event) launched the first ever men’s specific New York Fashion Week. What a time for the fashion-obsessed to be alive! This historical fashion event kicked off July 13th and ended July 16th and it did not disappoint!
With the likes of renowned designers Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger were refreshing newcomers Public School, Michael Bastian and Tim Coppens. A personal favorite was the N. Hoolywood SS16 line. The minimalistic looks could easily be translated into ready to wear looks and could work for several types of occasions. Using mostly shades of black and white with splashes of red and blue thrown in, the line looked very cohesive and flowed nicely. The look was reminiscent of a Rick Owens type style with the dark colors and oversized silhouettes and all in all it came together amazingly.
Another line to be noted was Public School’s SS16 line. Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne never fail to amaze, but they really outshone the competition with this line. Both Chow and Osborne hail from New York City so it is no surprise that they perfectly captured the vibe and culture of New York City street style with their line. What makes their line so trendy is the fact that they take a classic silhouette and they switch it up to make it more new and modern and updated for now. For example, in their new line they paired a tailored zip up blazer over a pair shorts and topped it off with a baseball cap, all in white. They finished off this look with a pair of mid calf socks and balanced out the all white look with a pair of black sneakers. This is the refreshing thing about Public School: that they take more tailored and crisp pieces and dress them down, showing men that they can take a professional look to the streets or even bring a street wear look to a more professional environment.
All in all, a huge trend of the event, seen in almost all of the designer’s works was minimalistic coloring. A lot of all white and all black looks were seen and this has a been a huge trend this entire year, being seen on celebrities everywhere. Also a lot of mixing crisp pieces with dressed down pieces such as what Public School did with their line was seen throughout the event.
More big New York Fashion related news broke this weekend after Men’s Fashion week. Riccardo Tisci, creative director of Givenchy, decided to present his collection in New York for the regular New York Fashion Week rather than Paris. This comes following news that a Givenchy New York flagship store is set to open on Madison Ave in September, so it is no surprise that Tisci aimed to cause excitement about the new line in New York. This will be only the third U.S. store Givenchy with the others located in Miami and Las Vegas, yet CEO Philippe Fortunato states that locations in Florida and California are being discussed. This will probably be the only season Givenchy decides to show in New York instead of Paris because the brand is renowned for showing in Paris every year.
New York Men’s Fashion Week will go down in history as the first ever men’s specific fashion week in New York and if the first one is any indication, this is amazing news for the fashion community. And how could it not be amazing when the CFDA spent two years trying to bring it to life? New York Fashion Week: Men’s will happen twice a year in July and January and will be huge for men’s fashion and designers all over the world!
