Here in the United States, we have a lot of options when it comes to where we can get our food. From fast food restaurants to mega grocery centers, we make deliberate, personal choices about the food we eat and the places we specifically go to get it. The organic food trend has been on the rise, as more people are buying it after they learn about the high toxins in regular, packaged foods.

“Four out of ten families say they are buying more organic products than they were a year ago.”

Eating fully organic, however, comes with a price. Organic products in supermarkets tend to cost more than non-organic options. Places like Whole Foods offer a goldmine of various organic products, but end up costing you more in the end. A recent study conducted by Wolfe research has found, through comparing the prices of organic products at Whole Foods to the same organic products at other grocery stores, that you’ll actually wind up spending more on the same groceries at Whole Foods. The cost of buying all of those organic products at Whole Foods totaled $260, while the groceries at the other stores ended up costing $215, a $45 difference and a major reason to shop co-op.

So how are you supposed to go organic if everything seems to be out of your price range?

Your best bet is to check out your local co-op. Not only will you be benefiting your own lifestyle, you’ll also be helping your community. Many local co-ops list which farms their products come from. More likely than not, the farms they get their food from are all local, which means everything arrives at the store fresh, not frozen.

Another great way to maximize your spending at your local co-op is to buy products in bulk. By buying more units, you lessen the overall cost. It is also kinder to the environment when you buy in bulk. Think of how much plastic we as a society waste on pre-packaged foods. Buying bulk helps cut down on that. Plus, you save money in the long run. Foods like pasta and beans have a long shelf life meaning, once you buy them in bulk, you’ll have a consistent supply of food to eat for a long time. When you buy food from a co-op, you are helping to strengthen your local economy. By shopping at your local co-op , you are ensuring the jobs of many hard working farmers and their employees. The products you eat didn’t have to travel far, so, in turn, they taste fresh and are more nutritious when you eat them.

With organic products quickly becoming a household choice, shopping at co-ops aren’t too far off. We are all more comfortable when we know where our food comes from. Co-ops offer the community the opportunity to try delicious, local food without the high price. With co-ops around, you don’t have to pay more for organic foods. You can buy your favorite products at a great price, and, you may even discover an amazing product that comes from your own city’s backyard.
