A Drinking Man's Game: The Art in The Age "Sage"

I’m not sure if I can speak for the rest of you but it’s been quite an interesting week for me, and I’m looking forward to unwinding tonight with a nice drink. This week we find ourselves standing at a mega-wall of spirits with various new alternatives for us to try. I’m looking through it all with a lot of different options having me torn because frankly I wanted them all. But, that’s when I saw it. I saw a bottle that seemed clean with an impressive attention to detail. It was like it called right to me through every other choice I could make, I knew it was the one.

Sage itself is considered to be one of the most important healing plants in the world, having been used to spiritually cleanse dwellings and people through various practices throughout time. Burning sage is a tradition ingrained in many cultures. Sage has also been used to increase wisdom as well as provide clarity. This week, the game has scored us a bottle that not only shares the name Sage but also could share that ubiety. This spirit produced by Modern Spirits for Art in The Age has managed to capture the essence of sage in a bottle.

As soon as the cork popped, a botanical aroma filled the air. It’s presence resonated despite the smell of wood burning in the fire-pit. I decided to let the bottle breath while I prepared ice and mixers for the tasting. Watermelon, cranberry, orange juice and lemonade were in the lineup for the evening.

My first preparation was neat. The drink was definitely smooth despite its 40% alcohol by volume. Its pleasant smell made it a delightful experience to drink straight. But I soon found out Sage is not made for your traditional drink mixers. My homemade alcoholic concoctions were unacceptable for this unique spirit. If your not drinking this straight, Sage requires pulling out a shaker. Abandoning the lemonade, cranberry and orange juice, it was time to give watermelon a try. A martini only seemed right to finish the experience. The subtle sweetness of the watermelon juice blended well with the organic herbaceous elements. I recommend thinking out of the box when preparing drinks with Sage. Ingredients like rose, watermelon, mint or even cucumber would be complimentary when sipping this sophisticated spirit.

Sage can definitely become a part of your Friday night repertoire. At $30, you not only get a wonderful bottle from Modern Spirits to add to your collection, but Art in The Age also jump starts you with a recipe book to ensure that you experience Sage in all of its glory.
